I've been patiently waiting to show you these adorable pics that Katie and Dan from peekaboo photography took of Beck for the new spring Naartjie catalog. Beck is the PERFECT Naartjie baby if I do say so myself! When we did these, it was the time of Becks birthday so Whoo-hoo for his 1 year pics, he has a bugger of a time looking at his mom for pictures, this whole thing worked out perfect! Ella was also invited to join in the catalog and looks so freakin cute, get your hands on one if you can!

I LOVE this shoot!!! First off Danielle was so, so easy to photograph. She is truly a classic beauty, pure and simple. Anybody recognize my most favorite film man? That's right, it's David Perry and this is his lovely family! I was totally honored when they asked me to do this for them, I mean do you even have any idea how many photographers David knows? Like a gazillion. So thanks guys for asking me! We really wanted to take these in an apple orchard because Danielle has craved apples her entire pregnancy, but by the time we could finally get together, all the apple orchards were bare... boo. I DO like the simplicity of the apples in the basket though, I think it gets the point across.

Wow! What beautiful people, seriously. Raven and Matt were so so cool on this shoot. Raven, love, I am so sorry I kept calling you Jasmine, I felt like the biggest tool in the shed, but I love that you were so nice about it, thanks. Matt is originally from my neck of the woods so we got to chat about peeps we might know and laugh about the myths of devil worshiping when we were in school... (Go Ask Alice.) Funny stuff.
On a side note, it has taken me like 1 1/2 hours just to post these pictures because there's a massive spider crawling all over my 20 ft. walls and ceiling. He's a fast bugger too. I have the heebie jeebies so bad right now. I keep thinking he's going to drop on my head any minute if I'm not eyeing him at all times. Bleh, my skin is crawling. I'm afraid to go to bed because I'll lose track of him then find him tomorrow when I take a big sip of water. Yuck!

Why Does Custom Photography Cost More?

The digital revolution has brought amazing flexibility and ability to control various factors during the image taking and making process. Photographers, the hobbyist, the professional, the amateur all benefit from this ability to manipulate pixels. However, with flexibility comes a price. Digital camera equipment is still considerably more expensive when you factor in its’ lifespan, the need for additional resources for processing those images, the time it takes to get a usable image and the effort that goes into creating a work of photographic art.

We all know that you can go to the local Walgreen’s and pay a $1.99 for a print - as a client you may wonder why you may pay upwards of $50, $70, $90 for a custom photography print. Photographers hear this statement every once in awhile:

“How in the world can you charge $60 for an 8×10 if it costs me less than $2 to print at x store?”

The truth of the matter is the answer to this question is multifaceted. Much of the cost of a photographic print produced by a professional photographer has a lot to do with the time, equipment costs, artistic vision and reputation of the photographer not to mention expertise and the usual costs of running a legitimate business.

The cost of TIME
Approaching it from a time standpoint, let’s imagine that you have hired a photographer who has work that you love. This photographer is traveling an hour to your destination to photograph your session. Here is an example of a time break down:
session prep time (30 mins - 1 hour, includes equipment and back up equipment checks + vehicle checks)

one hour travel time TO session

15-30 minutes prep time at client’s home

90 minutes-2 hours with client photographing subject

one hour travel time FROM session

30-45 minutes uploading time from digital cards from camera to computer

30-45 minutes time spent backing up the original images

2-5 hours editing time to present you with a diverse gallery of edited images

1 hour prep time getting ready for ordering

2-3 hours time with client for ordering images

1 hour sorting through and checking order

30 minutes-1 hour prep time for delivery

30 minutes-1 hour getting order shipped

any additional phone time or time needed for add on ordering, shipment issues, quality issues

In this example, the time spent per client can range from just under 13 hours to 19 hours - dependent on the photographer’s level of service. This is time dedicated only to ONE session. When the photographer charges $150-$300 for the photo shoot (aka SESSION FEE) you are not just paying for the two hours of session time, you are paying the photographer for 12-19 hours complete time for your session.The COSTS of Maintaining a Custom Photography Business:

Regarding equipment costs, a good quality professional camera with a selection of good optical quality lenses and digital storage mediums and computer set up can run from $10,000-$30,000 costs dependent on the photographer. Even though you can purchase a really good quality digital SLR for about $2100 there are still other costs related to photography. A good lens for portrait photography can run from $900 to $2500. A dependable computer system with software loaded for business and creative usage can run $2500 to $8000 dependent on the photographer.

Then come lab costs for specialty products. A good photographer knows the lab is integral to their success. Photography labs dedicated to the professional photographer often cost more and offer a range of products that allows the custom photographer to continually offer new, innovative products for you, the discerning client.

Discussion other costs of running a photography business could take awhile so we’ll skip many of the intricate details. There is of course much more: including costs of running the business, taxes, studio rental/mortgage if the photographer has ownership of a dedicated studio, vehicular costs, costs of advertising/marketing, costs of sample pieces that the photographer will likely bring to your session, etc.

APPLES to ORANGES to BANANAS:
Often times clients will mention to their photographer that X studio in the mall/department store only charges $19.99 for an 8×10 “sheet” or they may mention other things related to discount photography chains. The fact is those discount chains make their money on volume, not on customized 1:1 service. In February 2007 leased photography retail space by a rather well known discount department store that started in Arkansas closed down 500 of their portrait studios across the nation? The reason is simple, you cannot make money on 99¢ “professional” prints if you do not sell enough of them. Interestingly enough - those same studios that offer the loss leader packages often charge much much more for their a la carte pricing (as high as $40-50 for an 8×10). The whole reason the big department stores began offering portrait services in the first place was to get you, the savvy consumer, in through their door so that you could spend more money with them in other departments. Your “PORTRAITS” are considered the “loss leader”.

Going to a chain studio, as a consumer, you don’t have the benefit of 1:1 attention for 2 hours at your home where your child is allowed to explore, play and be comfortable in their home environment, nor do you get the experience that many custom photographers are known for or the lovely captures of natural expressions. You simply get a bare bones, “SAY CHEESE” experience. Keep this in mind when selecting a photographer.

REPUTATION/EXPERTISE of the PHOTOGRAPHER:

Being in demand, being well known for quality work, having a good reputation often costs time on the photographer’s part. Their expertise comes at a cost, their time learning their craft and learning the intricacies of lighting and the commitment put forth on their end to create a persona about their business that oozes professionalism. A great number of photographers go a very long time from the time that they purchase their first good camera to making money at the business of photography. Many photographers, when first starting out, rush in thinking that the business will be easily profitable in no time, how expensive could it be to get a camera and use it to create their dream? They often neglect to factor in the cost of business, the cost of equipment, software, back ups, etc..

Being of sound reputation, a better professional photographer knows that they must always reinvest in their business to create the reputation of being top notch. To create good work good equipment, reliable equipment, back up equipment is a necessity. The photographer who desires to be known as better/best/unparalelled reputation-wise knows that the most important thing they can do for their business is reliability and dependability. This is how reputations get built. Good work often is a wonderful side product of building that good reputation.

Ellas 7th B Day

My girl turned 7 on March 4th. 7, seven, SEVEN! I can hardly stand it. Why does childhood have to be taken away so quickly? I HATE that my kiddies have to grow up... why can't they stay young and innocent forever? Boo.
We really tried to make Ellas day special from Mark getting her favorite thing in the world -flowers-, to dining at her favorite restaurant -Carrabbas-, to dancing around the kitchen to our "birthday song" -Happy Birthday to Me by Cracker-. And as I was reminiscing about Ella through out the day, I couldn't help but feel completely overwhelmed by how much I love my little ellaluvbugs. She means everything to me. She wants so badly to please me and takes everything to heart. Her demeanor is pure sweetness... so much so, it's hard not to take advantage of her. She is loving, compasionate, shy, goofy, emotional, sensitive, curious, true, artisitc, helpful, and much MUCH more.

You'll see she's glaring at me in one of the photos below, but it's SO appropriate for the moment because somethings never change.
When Ella was a baby, she hated to be confined in any way shape or form. She hated being strapped into her car seat, stroller, high chair, etc. She didn't like being cuddled all that much either. When she was sleepy, you could forget holding her or rocking her to sleep, she just wanted to be put down in her OWN bed and she'd take care of the rest. But the worst confinment for her was clothing and hair... still is. There can be no tightness of any sort ANYWHERE. No elastic around the chest, wrists, waist, ankles... nothing. Everything has to fit just right or else fit central will insue. It takes Ella a good 25 minutes to get dressed in the morning because she has to re-adjust everything AT LEAST 2 times... even the lining from her socks on her toes has to fit evenly. Nothing can be "too tight" OR "too loose". So when I begged to do her hair for her birthday and she actually let me... you can probably guess what went down, and I have the picture to prove it. Like I said before some things never change.

I decided for Christmas this year to hand make a special gift for my girls. I bought THIS BOOK in hopes to make toddler quilts out of their baby clothes and found these adorable cats inside the book. I don't know much about sewing so this book came in handy because it has step by step guides with pictures. I had to hide the fact that I was making these creatures, so I sewed at anybodys house that I knew had a sewing machine and because I didn't have one. On Christmas morning it was the first gift that Ella chose to play with... it took Claire a little longer. They now sleep with their friends every night, it's really quite sweet. AND the best part is, I got a sewing machine from Mark for my Christmas gift. Soooo, now I want to start using it, but need some quick and easy projects to break the machine in along with myself. Any ideas or links to easy projects would beneficial to me. Please leave a comment to help a sista out... Thanks!

Oh I had such a good time shooting these beauties. Ruby (the older one) had such personality, she had me cracking up the entire shoot, you would have never guessed she was about to turn eight... more like 30. And little sweet Sophie had such a soft demeanor, I was trying my darndest to get her to laugh, acting like a complete fool... what I do best.

ARE YOU EVEN KIDDING ME? Is what went through my head when I looked out the window one hour before I shot Aaron and Jennifers wedding. Winter had landed. I cannot put into words how windy and cold it was on December 19th at 2:00 p.m. at the Timpanogos temple. It was so cold and windy the temple president granted us permission to shoot their group shots inside the temple. -K- does anyone know how strict the temple workers are at the Timp temple? You even hold your camera while walking through the space between the two front sliding doors, and they're breathing down your neck, watching your every move like some how your going to miraculously have a camera that can shoot through walls to capture the sacred going-ons. So when they said we could shoot inside the foyer area, I nearly fainted.
It was so cold and windy that when we did their couple shots, we basically couldn't do them. We couldn't relax enough to even breathe right. It honestly felt like we were in the Nordic tundra. Luckily I had two VERY awesome clients who held on like champs to the end without one complaint, to produce some fab photos. So thanks Aaron and Jennifer, you two rock!

Southern Weddings Just published their premiere issue and it's A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! It's one of those magazines that you just want to sit down by yourself with no distractions and examine every snippet in detail. It's eye candy to say the least, even my seven year old couldn't keep her hands off it. It's now one of my favorite wedding magazines with lot's and lot's of photos from my absolute favorite wedding photographers. It caters perfectly to everyone in the wedding industry whether you're a future bride or simply a photographer like myself. What! 2008 is over? Wow, that went FAST, didn't it? I hope everyone made through this past year alright, it was kind of a crazy year to say the least.
I've been thinking and pondering quite a bit about New Years resolutions and have been reading peoples extreme goals for this coming year, good for you if you are one of them, seriously.

For me? I'm going to focus on relationships. My relationship with my husband especially... date night once a week is going to be a MUST! I told him today I've never loved him more than I do today, and I really do. After 11.5 years of marriage I am totally and completely attracted to him, I find him incredibly sexy and want to be with him 24/7. I'm always bummed when Monday starts and call him daily to see if by chance he's going to get off early from work so I can spend just an extra hour with him. I still get a thrill when he touches the not so small of my back when I'm cooking dinner. I yearn for his smile and laugh. I find it thrilling when we have those connecting moments... you know, when you totally "get" each other? I love when he let's his guard down at home and is comfortable doing so, acting like a complete fool... oooh, I love it! So anyway, I want to be with my love MORE this year, I can't get enough of the man.

Relationships with old friends is going to have to be up their too... Oh, how I've missed you guys. I'm going to host a lot of "get-togethers" this year... I just want people around me, so be prepared. I want to meet new people this year and "do lunch." So if anyone who reads this blog and lives in the area, I've got a question for you, wanna do lunch? I'm dead serious. Really, I am, let's hang.

Last but not least, my relationship with my kiddies. I am going to spend quality time with them everyday, even if it's just ten minutes, they need that. I want to snuggle up with them and just have a chat... with pictures.

Meet my beloved neighbors when I was growing up, the Nelsons. I love this family so much! Heather (bottom right) and I were incredibly close through elementary school and junior high... if our lights were on in our bedrooms, it was time to hang out and get into mischief. Oh man, how I miss those days of total freedom. Heather now works as a life flight nurse in Salt Lake (first responder,) how cool is that? Luckily I get to stay in touch with my mom still living close to Claudia.
When we did this shoot, it was clear skies until we stepped out of our vehicles, then the flurries decided to visit. Thanks to Utah weather, the flurries left as fast as they approached and we were able to do our shoot... phew. You guys are awesome! awesome! awesome!

This wedding was so EASY! These two did not need to be told to "look like your in love" (yes I've had to say that before.) They hammed it up in front of my camera big time. For an end of November wedding the colors were striking and the lighting perfect, I couldn't have asked for a better wedding to photograph. Yeah Sarah is getting married!!! Sarah and I did the photography program together at BYU back in the day... early 2000's. We were in a group who have all done really well with their gift of artistry ( Pepper Nix, Jonas Otsuji. Travis Lovell, Jami Broadbent, Angela Pierce, Leslie Krout, Joey Moon (content warning), and my all time fav Jonathan Canlas.
Sarah is such a classy, sophisticated girl, I just think she's so cool and hello Matt? She clenched a hottie, and he's way cool to boot too... ooo, ooo, ooo.

This is what my kiddies look like at exactly 2 months. The first is Ella, then Claire, then Beck. Beck sure is a mix between the two in my opinion.
I love when my babies hit 2 months, it seems to get so much easier, but 3 months is my hallelujah mark. Oh how I miss those first two babies.

I'm finally an able to post these... Angela got married yesterday and didn't want her then fiance to sneak peak at these gorgeous pictures so since they got hitched I can now put them up. I did these at Memory Grove at peak season, not knowing then that the colors would be so vibrant, we lucked out to say the least. These guys rocked this shoot, it was seriously so easy and fast, and thank goodness to that since nasty daylight savings is upon us (blah.) We lucked out on this shoot with color because the very next day the snow storm that hit Utah killed everything and all the vibrant leaves turned brittle, browned and fell of the trees.
